The fans experience a dream day at the European Mountain Championship in Tulwitz. The best stack deep, so everything open for the race day.
The spectators came in droves, saw and marveled: “What the new organizational team has put together here is already wonderful. We came all the way from Bavaria and were really flashed. Everything is dressed up, wonderful natural grandstands and excellent regional delicacies – plus pure racing feeling – what more could you want!” said a group of fans from near Passing.
The organizing trio Mario Klammer, Peter Eibisberger and Christian Ferstl is also very satisfied with the first day at Rechberg. “Several thousand fans have already been here today and praised us for our work. But we would also like to say thank you – because without spectators such an event simply doesn’t work. The atmosphere was already great today and we are already looking forward to tomorrow!”
Now to the sporting side:
242 starters gratefully accepted the three practice runs and showed already from the second practice what they were going to do on race day.
The schedule held, as just after 6:00 p.m. all vehicles had arrived back at the paddock.
A few slips and also technical problems were quite bearable, only the crash of Ewald Scherr in the Ford Escort Cosworth in the notorious “Lackner Reith” curve cost about 30 minutes for clean-up work. Ewald Scherr was uninjured in his trip into the concrete guardrail, but his car will probably have to spend some time in the workshop.
In the touring cars, Jörg Weidinger (BMW Z4 GT3) was the fastest. He was followed by Marek Rybnicek (KTM X-BOW GTX) and Nicolas Werver (Porsche 997 GT3 R).
Fastest Styrian is Reinhold Taus with his Subaru P4 Turbo, the fastest Styrian is Sigrid Ferstl with her Formula Tatuus Master S200.
The generally fastest lady at Rechberg after practice is Tereza Machowa, she pilots a Norma M20 F Honda and comes from the Czech Republic.
Among the top pilots was stacked deep … no one really let himself look at the cards and so we will be able to experience for the race day still some time fireworks. So excitement is well provided for.
In the standings, the top favorite can be found in first place after 3 practice sessions. Christian Merli (ITA) drove his Osella FA 30 Judd LRM up the pass in a time of 1:46.760, but was slowed by a yellow flag because Alexander Hin had spun in front of him.
Petr Trinka (CZE) followed him with a time of 1:47.284 and the fast Joseba Iraola Lanzagorta (ESP) was stopped third fastest with 1:48.191.
So the fans can look forward to Sunday. The first race will start at 09.00, the second race run has been scheduled by the Rechberg team for 13.00.
